There is a quiet confidence that comes with genuine oak. At West Sussex Antique Timber, our material is sourced exclusively from established French timber yards, where forests are carefully managed and harvested with long-term stewardship in mind. These suppliers operate to rigorous environmental standards, ensuring the oak is sustainably produced and carbon-neutral at source.
The selected timber is then brought to our workshop in West Sussex, where it is cut, prepared and finished by skilled craftsmen using a combination of modern precision machinery and traditional techniques. Each board is shaped with care and attention, preserving the natural character of the oak while achieving the exacting standards required for exceptional flooring. The result is a floor of enduring quality — refined, authentic and designed to last for generations.
Solid oak flooring is a type of hardwood flooring made from single pieces of natural oak wood. Each plank is crafted from a single solid piece of oak, typically made to specific thicknesses.
A key feature of this flooring is its natural grain patterns and tone, which can vary from warm hues to deeper, richer shades. Since it’s made entirely from oak, it can be sanded and refinished multiple times. It’s particularly known for its strength and resilience, making it a suitable choice for high-traffic areas in the home such as kitchens or living rooms.
Choosing oak flooring comes with a host of benefits that make it a standout option for any interior:
Flooring can last from 50 to 100 years with proper care. With each plank being a single piece of solid oak, it is highly resistant to wear and can be refinished multiple times over its lifetime.
Choosing solid wood flooring is not only a stylish decision but also an environmentally conscious one. It can be recycled or reused at the end of its life cycle, significantly reducing waste and minimising its environmental impact.
The cost of solid oak flooring will vary depending on factors such as grade, style, board width and thickness. You will also need to consider costs for installation, finishing, and any necessary underlayment. Contact us for a free, direct quote.
Aside from solid oak, we also offer several other wooden flooring options for you to choose from.
Engineered oak flooring is made from multiple layers of wood. This means it’s less prone to shrinking and a better option for rooms with changing humidity or temperatures. It looks exactly like solid oak and is available in a variety of finishes and colours. It is a great choice for kitchens or homes with underfloor heating.
Parquet flooring is a more decorative type of wooden flooring. Unlike traditional straight plank flooring, parquet uses aesthetic layouts such as herringbone and chevron to achieve a visually appealing and sophisticated looking. Similar to solid oak flooring, they are made from single pieces of hardwood, and remain a fantastic choice for contemporary spaces like living rooms or dining rooms.
If you’re unsure on whether solid oak flooring is the right choice for your home, consider the following:
Yes you can have underfloor heating under solid oak flooring, however there are many factors to consider when installing solid oak flooring over underfloor heating and we would recommend that it should be installed by our experienced craftsmen.
To maintain solid oak flooring, sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and grit, and use a damp mop sparingly with a wood-safe cleaner. You should place rugs in high-traffic areas, and use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches. We recommend cleaning any spills immediately to avoid stains, and consider using curtains to protect from sun fading. For long-term care, the floor will require additional coats of the chosen floor protection.
Iain and I would like to thank you and your fantastic team for the fitting of our lovely new lounge floor. We are delighted with it and the colour is perfect, so absolutely 100% how we envisaged it.
Your fitting and finishing teams were great and very professional not to mention incredibly helpful so please do pass on our thanks to them. Thank you also for arranging for the matching piece of dado rail which Martin kindly fitted having removed the old bit, and it all looks great.
We will look forward to having our hall floor done in the same wood, colour, etc
I would like to say how pleased I am with the restoration of the Parque floors. They look really lovely, such a difference from what was hidden underneath the old fitted carpet. Dave and Martin did a superb job and were a pleasure to have working here. We would have no hesitation in recommending your company to anyone else.
I have used West Sussex Antique Timber on two separate occasions and was hugely impressed both times. WSA timber fitted solid wood plank flooring and engineered wood parquet flooring in my home, both types of flooring being of excellent quality. The craftsmanship of the fitters is commendable and the finish is flawless. I would not hesitate to recommend the company for an outstanding product and service.
My floor is all done and looking absolutely amazing thank you. I just wanted to tell you how pleased we are and to say that the three guys were brilliant- polite, tidy, respectful and very skilled at what they do. We have had many projects and trades at our house over 15 years and nothing ever goes right or it’s a battle to get it completed, so to have someone actually turn up, do exactly what they said and achieve exactly what we wanted is quite a novelty I can tell you.
