Types of wood flooring
Solid Oak
Flooring
This durable and classic choice is made from a single piece of oak, providing exceptional stability and longevity. Its rich grain patterns and warm tones add timeless beauty to any space, and it can be sanded and refinished multiple times to maintain its appearance.
Engineered Oak
Flooring
Comprising a layer of solid oak over a cross bonded plywood, engineered oak offers greater resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations. This makes it suitable for various environments while still delivering the elegant look of solid oak.
Parquet
Flooring
Crafted from small pieces of wood arranged in intricate geometric patterns, parquet flooring creates a distinctive and stylish aesthetic. Available in multiple wood types and styles, it brings a touch of sophistication to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Wood Floor Fitting & Installation FAQs
What is the best solid wood flooring to install?
The best solid wood flooring to install depends on several factors, including your style preferences, budget, and the space in question. Oak is one of the most popular choices due to its durability, attractive grain, and ability to blend well with various interior styles. You will also need to consider the wood’s hardness rating, as this affects how well it can withstand high traffic and scratches.
What should I consider before installing flooring?
Before considering having your new flooring installed, you should ask yourself the following:
- What type of flooring do you want? You should have an idea of which type of wood flooring you prefer, such as solid oak, engineered oak, or parquet. Each type has different costs, installation requirements, and durability levels, which can significantly impact your overall budget.
- How big is the installation area? Measure the area where you plan to install the flooring. Larger spaces will require more materials and labour, so accurate measurements are essential for an accurate quote.
- What is the condition of the subflooring? Assess the condition of your existing subfloor, meaning what sits beneath your current flooring. Any necessary repairs or preparations (like levelling) will add to the installation costs.
- Are there any additional costs? Underlayment, trim, or mouldings, as well as the removal and disposal of old flooring, will add to the project cost.
We will discuss all of this with you beforehand to ensure you understand the extent of your project and the best way forward.
How is wood flooring installed?
- Firstly, we prepare the subfloor, ensuring it is clean, dry, and level.
- Next, we plan the layout of the boards. We typically start installation from the longest wall or a straight edge in the room, ensuring that the first row is straight and square to the walls.
- We then start installing the flooring. Our methods will change depending on the type of wood or project, but mostly use screwing, nailing or glueing techniques.
- We then clean the floor and apply any necessary finishes if required
How long does wood flooring installation take?
It would depend on the area size, flooring and style and room shape, we will be able to give you a time estimate once we have assessed this information.
Can I install wood flooring over concrete?
Yes, you can install either solid oak or engineered flooring over a concrete subfloor, the fixing method is determined during a survey.
How often should wood floors be retreated?
Wood floors should generally be retreated every 7 to 10 years, depending on factors such as the type of wood, the finish used, and the amount of foot traffic the floors receive. Higher-traffic areas may require more frequent retreating, possibly every 3 to 5 years, while less frequented spaces might not need it as often.
Retreating is a simple process which involves lightly sanding the surface of the flooring and apply a coat of the floor finish. If a more thorough floor refurbishment is required we offer a full sanding service.
Why is it important to maintain expansion gaps around door frames during wood flooring installation?
Maintaining expansion gaps is crucial to allow the wood to extend and contract with changes in humidity. Expansion gaps are generally left around all fixed objects such as walls, skirting boards, radiator pipes and sometimes between individual boards within the flooring.
Are your installation services eco-friendly?
Yes, our wood flooring installation services are eco-friendly. Timber is incredibly sustainable and can be recycled when no longer needed. We also aim to minimise waste recycling off-cuts and old flooring materials.
Once again, I wanted to thank you all for a really great service. Everyone from the back office to the guys who came to fit the floor has been a real pleasure to deal with. The floors are absolutely amazing. They look so beautiful. Transformational.
An excellent job, we are really pleased. We would also like to mention the team of craftsmen should be applauded not only for their work, but for the caring and helpful way they executed their endeavours, explained what they were doing, and generally pleasant to be around.
I have used West Sussex Antique Timber on two separate occasions and was hugely impressed both times. WSA timber fitted solid wood plank flooring and engineered wood parquet flooring in my home, both types of flooring being of excellent quality. The craftsmanship of the fitters is commendable and the finish is flawless. I would not hesitate to recommend the company for an outstanding product and service.
The door looks amazing, in no small part due to the care and attention lavished upon it by your carpenter, Ricky. He’s done a truly excellent job!
Please accept our thanks for the fantastic job your team has done on our floor, it has greatly exceeded our expectations and looks absolutely amazing. Not cheap but worth every penny, a testament to the saying “you get what you pay for”.
I would like to say how pleased I am with the restoration of the Parque floors. They look really lovely, such a difference from what was hidden underneath the old fitted carpet. Dave and Martin did a superb job and were a pleasure to have working here. We would have no hesitation in recommending your company to anyone else.
