Common Questions

Wood Floor Installation FAQs

The best solid wood flooring to install depends on several factors, including your style preferences, budget, and the space in question. Oak is one of the most popular choices due to its durability, attractive grain, and ability to blend well with various interior styles. You will also need to consider the wood’s hardness rating, as this affects how well it can withstand high traffic and scratches.

Before considering having your new flooring installed, you should ask yourself the following:

  • What type of flooring do you want? You should have an idea of which type of wood flooring you prefer, such as solid oak, engineered oak, or parquet. Each type has different costs, installation requirements, and durability levels, which can significantly impact your overall budget.
  • How big is the installation area? Measure the area where you plan to install the flooring. Larger spaces will require more materials and labour, so accurate measurements are essential for an accurate quote.
  • What is the condition of the subflooring? Assess the condition of your existing subfloor, meaning what sits beneath your current flooring. Any necessary repairs or preparations (like levelling) will add to the installation costs.
  • Are there any additional costs? Underlayment, trim, or mouldings, as well as the removal and disposal of old flooring, will add to the project cost.

We will discuss all of this with you beforehand to ensure you understand the extent of your project and the best way forward.

  1. Firstly, we prepare the subfloor, ensuring it is clean, dry, and level.
  2. Next, we plan the layout of the boards. We typically start installation from the longest wall or a straight edge in the room, ensuring that the first row is straight and square to the walls.
  3. We then start installing the flooring. Our methods will change depending on the type of wood or project, but mostly use screwing, nailing or glueing techniques.
  4. We then clean the floor and apply any necessary finishes if required

It would depend on the area size, flooring and style and room shape, we will be able to give you a time estimate once we have assessed this information.

Yes, you can install either solid oak or engineered flooring over a concrete subfloor, the fixing method is determined during a survey.

Wood floors should generally be retreated every 7 to 10 years, depending on factors such as the type of wood, the finish used, and the amount of foot traffic the floors receive. Higher-traffic areas may require more frequent retreating, possibly every 3 to 5 years, while less frequented spaces might not need it as often.

Retreating is a simple process which involves lightly sanding the surface of the flooring and apply a coat of the floor finish. If a more thorough floor refurbishment is required we offer a full sanding service.

Maintaining expansion gaps is crucial to allow the wood to extend and contract with changes in humidity. Expansion gaps are generally left around all fixed objects such as walls, skirting boards, radiator pipes and sometimes between individual boards within the flooring.

Yes, our wood flooring installation services are eco-friendly. Timber is incredibly sustainable and can be recycled when no longer needed. We also aim to minimise waste recycling off-cuts and old flooring materials.
